Random number generator, also known as RNG, is a way of generating a sequence of numbers or symbols that lack any pattern, thus giving the illusion of being random. Randomness is important for many things in life – including gambling games and lotteries – because it creates an even playing field. RNG is also used in cryptography, which is the practice of secure communication in the presence of third parties. Cryptography relies on two keys: a public key and a private key. The public key can be shared with anyone and is used to encrypt data, whereas the private key must be kept confidential and is used to decrypt data that has been encrypted with the public key. Both keys are generated by an RNG algorithm.
