The Vietnamese government has announced the arrest of a group accused of operating an illegal $3.8 billion online gambling ring, according to Reuters. The Ministry of Public Security said that authorities had shut down the website and confiscated money from bank accounts linked to the operation.
The gambling ring was allegedly run by a Chinese national, and Vietnamese citizens were used as “money mules” to transfer funds. The Ministry of Public Security said that the ring had caused losses of more than VND800 billion (approximately $35 million) to local businesses and individuals.
According to Reuters, the Vietnamese government has identified Evolution Gaming as one of the companies involved in the illegal gambling operation. However, a spokesman for Evolution Gaming told TotallyGaming that the company is not aware of any connection between it and the alleged ring in Vietnam.
“We are not aware of any such activity,” he said. “Evolution Gaming does not operate in Vietnam nor do we have any business dealings with operators there.”
The Ministry of Public Security said that the ring was involved in online gambling and sports betting, with over 200 employees operating under both Vietnamese and foreign managers.
